New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
