No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
