The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
