Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
